DONE WITH THUMBS!!!

I'll never forget walking into Ella's room when she was 4 months old and seeing her suck her thumb for the first time. I thought it was so cute that I just had to take this picture.

Pretty cute, right?! She never was a binky baby and I thought we had gotten off easy. As she got a little older, I started to worry. How am I going to break this habit? Everyone said things like "oh it's not that big a deal. It's not like she's going to go to kindergarten doing it." So I blew it off. But she kept getting older and she kept sucking her thumb. At one point when she was 4, we had broken the habit. It seemed the thought of having messed up teeth like mom had (she's seen pictures) was enough to scare her out of it. It was for a few months anyways until she realized her friend still sucked her thumb. It must be okay, right? I feel like I've tried everything, but nothing was working. At the end of my rope and thinking we are just going to have to resort to the orthodontic thingy that pokes her thumb every time she sucks it, I gave up. UNTIL...I saw on Chuck E Cheese website that they had a "Done with Thumbs" calendar. And if you can go 2 weeks without sucking your thumb, you can get free tokens from Chuck E! That combined with a few other things, did the trick. Desperate times call for desperate measures and so I also offered to take her to the High School Musical Ice Tour if she could go 3 weeks without sucking it. She agreed. And she wanted one more thing...to make cookie dough with her friends and eat it. Not cookies...cookie dough! So fine with me! Really I think it came down to her just being ready. But she did it! And now she has gone almost 2 months without sucking her thumb during the day, and a couple of weeks without doing it at night! GO ELLA! And whew...kindergarten starts in August and she really won't go to school doing it!!!! So here are a few pictures of her getting those very worth while rewards!!!

Thanks Chuck E!!!!

Who can blame her? The cookie dough really is better than the cookie!

High School Musical Ice Tour....more on that below!

Congrats Ella!! I too was a thumb sucker for years and my parents put that metal pointing thing in my mouth. Well, I figured out how to bend the metal and still suck my thumb! Crazy right!?!

I'm glad you were able to come up with some positive ways to help her. It's not an easy thing to give up. Way to go mom!
